Grandpa's Magic Shed Book 5
The Lighthouse Beneath the Bed
What if your dreams could float across an endless sea? What if your greatest fears could become real? And what if the person you had been searching for was waiting somewhere beyond the darkness?
For ten-year-old Ben, discovering the magical secrets hidden inside Grandpa's old garden shed had changed his life in ways he could never have imagined. His adventures had already taken him through enchanted grasslands, into a kingdom above the clouds, across a town trapped inside the same Tuesday for forty years and into a mysterious city inhabited entirely by forgotten toys.
Yet despite everything he had discovered, one question remained unanswered.
Where was Grandpa?
Every magical world had offered another fragment of the mystery. There had been handwritten warnings, extraordinary objects, half-forgotten memories and tantalising clues suggesting that Grandpa had been protecting something far more important than Ben could possibly understand.
Now, another seemingly ordinary object was about to lead him somewhere stranger and more dangerous than ever before. It began with an old brass torch.
When the battered torch switched itself on inside Grandpa's shed, Ben heard something that no torch should ever produce: the unmistakable sound of waves. Stranger still, its beam refused to shine in the direction he pointed it, instead behaving as though it had somewhere particular it wanted to go.
And when the old camp bed began displaying equally peculiar behaviour, Ben soon discovered that his next adventure would not involve walking, flying or travelling through a conventional doorway.
This time, he would be sailing.
Accompanied by his loyal friends Pip, the mischievous woodland girl with her enormous daisy hat, and Digby Burrows, a bespectacled talking mole whose enthusiasm for emergency sandwiches remained undiminished by repeated near-disasters, Ben found himself aboard a most extraordinary vessel.
Grandpa's old camp bed had transformed into a boat.
Together, they sailed into the mysterious Night Sea, a vast, dark ocean stretching beneath an endless sky filled with stars. Here, dreams drifted across the water in tiny paper boats, strange objects floated between the waves and the boundary between imagination and reality seemed dangerously uncertain.
Some dreams were wonderfully amusing, filled with impossible adventures, peculiar creatures and delightful nonsense.
Others were far less pleasant.
For the Night Sea was also home to nightmares.
And some of them had begun escaping.
As the friends ventured deeper into this extraordinary world, they encountered the mysterious Night Watchers, small hooded figures with glowing silver eyes who patrolled the darkness in narrow boats, collecting stray dreams before they could drift into dangerous waters.
Among them were Watcher Wick, who carried a distinctive crescent-shaped oar; Watcher Moth, whose special nets and glass jars captured wandering dreams; and Watcher Gloam, a quiet and observant timekeeper who understood just how serious their predicament had become.
The Night Watchers revealed that something had gone terribly wrong.
At the centre of the Night Sea stood an ancient lighthouse whose powerful beam had once kept the darkness at bay. Its light maintained the delicate boundary between sleeping minds and the creatures that inhabited their nightmares. But the lighthouse had stopped working.Without its protective beam, sinister beings known as Dreadlings were gathering beyond the darkness. These frightening creatures possessed an extraordinary and deeply unsettling ability.
They could become whatever someone feared most.
As the boundary weakened, the Dreadlings were moving closer, threatening to carry nightmares out of the Night Sea and into the waking world.
Even ordinary bedrooms might no longer be safe.
For Ben, the danger became increasingly personal when the dark waters began showing him familiar faces, places and memories. Some visions offered hope, while others seemed designed to make him abandon his search.
And somewhere beyond the waves, the silent lighthouse appeared to be waiting.
With Grandpa's mysterious brass torch seemingly guiding their journey, Ben and his friends set out towards the towering structure, hoping to discover why its light had vanished and whether its secrets might finally explain Grandpa's disappearance.
But the Night Sea was not a place where ordinary courage was enough.
Along their journey, the companions encountered an extraordinary collection of magical dangers, including the mysterious Island of Things That Might Happen, where imagined disasters seemed alarmingly capable of becoming real.
They also discovered a strange creature lurking beneath their boat.
At first, the creature appeared enormous and terrifying, growing more frightening whenever the friends attempted to escape. Yet when they finally found the courage to confront it, they discovered that its true appearance was something altogether unexpected.
The creature was little more than a trembling bundle of blackness, with enormous white eyes and a nervous disposition that might even have rivalled Digby's.
They named him Shiver.
Small, vulnerable and easily startled, Shiver soon became an unlikely companion, demonstrating that appearances could be wonderfully misleading and that sometimes the things we fear are themselves frightened.
But beyond the occasional humour and astonishing discoveries, the danger continued to grow.
When the friends eventually reached Lighthouse Harbour, they found a community of exhausted Night Watchers desperately struggling to remain awake. With the lighthouse extinguished, sleep itself had become dangerous, allowing nightmares to approach the very places they were supposed to protect.
The harbour could not survive indefinitely.
Somebody would have to restore the light.
And Grandpa's brass torch appeared determined that Ben should be the one to do it.
Their journey into the lighthouse brought new challenges, including an extraordinary staircase that seemed to grow longer whenever the travellers became frightened. Its endless steps forced Ben to confront a truth he had spent much of his adventure trying to avoid. He was afraid.Afraid that he might never find Grandpa. Afraid that everything he had discovered might simply be another trail of memories left behind by someone who was gone forever. But gradually, Ben began to understand something important. The Night Sea did not simply contain frightening things. It responded to fear itself, sometimes making imagined dangers larger and more powerful the harder someone tried to escape them.
The only way forward was not to pretend that fear did not exist, but to recognise it and carry on regardless.
With Pip's encouragement, Digby's reluctant determination and Shiver's unexpected companionship, Ben pressed onwards towards the lighthouse's greatest secret.
Yet the deeper they ventured, the clearer it became that the mysterious lighthouse was connected to something much older than the Night Sea.
Something involving Grandpa.
Something involving the magical doorways.
And something involving the sinister man with the silver key, whose influence had already been felt across the other extraordinary worlds.
As Ben uncovered more clues, he began to realise that his grandfather's disappearance was not an accident and that the dangers threatening the Night Sea might form part of a much larger plan.
Beyond the lighthouse's dark corridors lay secrets concerning the First Door, an ancient mystery connected to the very foundations of the magical worlds.
The truth promised to bring Ben closer to Grandpa than ever before.
But finding the person he loved might prove to be only the beginning of an even greater challenge.
For the first time since entering Grandpa's shed, Ben faced the possibility that discovering where his grandfather had gone and bringing him safely home might be two very different things.
And as the darkness gathered beyond the lighthouse, the strange power of the silver key threatened to awaken something that perhaps should never have been disturbed.
Could Ben restore the lighthouse before the nightmares escaped into the waking world? Would he discover the truth behind Grandpa's disappearance? And what ancient secret was hidden beyond the mysterious First Door?
